Replacing a Helmet

When Must I Replace a Helmet?

All BMX helmets must be replaced whenever a crash occurs. Although the damage may not be visible, it crushes some of the foam. The foam part of a helmet is made for one-time use only, and after crushing once it is no longer as protective as it was, even if it still looks intact. Examine your BMX helmet for marks or dents to know if you hit something

If you see any marks on the shell or measure any foam crush, you have to replace your BMX Helmet. It is recommended by most manufacturers to replace BMX helmets after five years. That could depend on usage, most helmets given reasonable care are good for longer than five years. But if your helmet is out of date, it's better not to take any chances and replace it. Also, the pieces can be replaced separately, like a buckle. If some piece breaks, it's not really necessary to replace your helmet, but only to replace the parts.

BMX helmets foam can be cracked or damaged if they are dropped on a hard surface. The cracks may be small and hard to see, so you need to look carefully. Cracks in the foam always require replacement of the helmet.
